“National AI Exploration Camp ” Was Successfully Concluded
Release time:February 14th , 2022

On the afternoon of February 12, sponsored by the Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence and the School of Artificial Intelligence of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, undertaken by CAAI Primary and Secondary School Working Committee, and co-organized by the Future Gene (Beijing) Artificial Intelligence Research Institute, the National Primary and Secondary School Artificial Intelligence Inquiry Learning Training Camp (hereinafter referred to as “AI Exploration Camp”) held the group project report of the middle school group and the primary school group and closing ceremony.

During the five-day activity, five expert lectures were arranged on the first day, leading the students to learn the basic knowledge of the concepts, principles, applications and subject directions of artificial intelligence. The expert lecture has a strong lineup of teachers, and invited professor Xiao Jun, deputy dean of the School of Artificial Intelligence of University of Chinese Academy of Sciences; associate professor Miao Qinghai, School of Artificial Intelligence from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences; researcher of the Institute of Automation from Chinese Academy of Sciences; Zhang Jiajun, a teacher, PhD Student tutor and doctor of the School of Artificial Intelligence of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences; engineer Zhang Sen of Intelligent Perception and Computing Research Center, Institute of Automation from Chinese Academy of Sciences, and associate professor Ai Yunfeng, the School of Artificial Intelligence from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences.

From the second day to the fifth day, the middle school group and the primary school group are divided into several groups according to the subject direction, and carry out project-based learning of subject exploration. A number of key teachers of artificial intelligence courses in primary and secondary schools lead students to practice some artificial intelligence projects from theory to practice, from data to code. On the afternoon of February 12 (the fifth day), the "AI Exploration Camp" conducted a group project report for middle and primary schools, in order to test the students' learning and creativity in the past few days.

Primary school project team report

Machine learning is the subject direction of the primary school group. The tutors are Professor Xiao Jun and Associate Professor Miao Qinghai. The practical project is "Plant Leaf Classification Algorithm Based on K-Nearest Neighbors". The tutor is Qiu Dingchen, chief researcher of the Future Genes (Beijing) Artificial Intelligence Research Institute.

In the project report, the students of the primary school group actively spoke and reported according to their respective division of labor.

After their reports, the two teachers made comments respectively, recognized the students' learning achievements, and encouraged everyone to make persistent efforts to take the direction of artificial intelligence learning as their ambition.

Report of middle school project team

The middle school group has three subject areas: machine learning, computer vision and natural language processing.

The instructor in the machine learning direction is engineer Zhang Sen. The practical project is Machine Learning Data Nuggets, and its instructor is Dr. Gong Chao, the chief expert of the Future Gene (Beijing) Artificial Intelligence Research Institute and assistant director of the Japan Research Center of Tsinghua University, and Yang Shuang who is an information technology teacher at Aerospace City School of the High School Affiliated to Renmin University of China.

The instructor in the direction of computer vision is associate professor Ai Yunfeng. There are two topics for the practical project. One is Using OpenCV + Mediapipe to Realize Gesture Recognition and Face Detection. Its instructor is Zheng Zijie, the chief teacher of artificial intelligence course at Beijing Eleven School; the other topic is Hard Hat Wearing Detection Platform Based on yolov5, and its instructor is Jin Xin, deputy director of the Science and Technology Innovation Center of Fengtai School of the Middle School Affiliated to Renmin University of China.

The instructor in the direction of natural language processing is researcher Zhang Jiajun. There are two topics for the practical project. One is Question and Answer System Based on Knowledge Graph. The instructors are Ren Yun, the head of the information technology teaching and research group of Beijing No.12 Middle School, and Zhang Yihan who is an information technology teacher; the other one is Planning and Design of 'Youyi' Platform Based on Natural Language Processing Technology. The instructors are Huang Binggang, the director of the Future Education Research Institute of Longhua District, Shenzhen City, Guangdong Province, and the leader of information technology disciplines in Guangdong Province and Huo Yingyi, the head of the information technology lesson preparation team of the Middle School Affiliated to the South China Normal University.

In the report, the middle school group showed the formidable super strength of future generations. In the topic selection, the students of the middle school group were close to social life, and determine their own topics in hot areas such as air quality forecasts, per capita disposable income forecasts, factors affecting house price changes, energy impact on GDP, and use knowledge graphs to build movie information query systems, video live surveys, song list recommendation systems based on song reviews, handwritten digit recognition and other topics that utilize natural language processing and computer vision.

After the report, 11 teachers made comments respectively. They pointed out that the report showed a certain level of professionalism and hoped that everyone will keep their love for artificial intelligence and contribute to the development of artificial intelligence in my country in the future.

The Closing Ceremony

After the primary school group and the middle school group completed the project report, the AI Exploration Camp also came to an end. The 5-day activity was not only an extraordinary experience for the 50 primary and secondary AI recruits, but also brought spiritual vibrations to the participating experts and teachers, making them more confident in the successor power of China's talents in the AI era.

At the closing ceremony, Professor Xiao Jun, the deputy dean of the School of Artificial Intelligence from University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, said: "Looking back at this event, from the initial event planning, to the subsequent teacher arrangement, student selection, to the implementation of each project and each process, the teachers have put in a lot of time and energy. Future Gene and the teachers of CAAI Primary and Secondary School Working Committee have done a good job in all the parts. In the follow-up learning process, the students could have a clear direction to know from which angles to develop deeply. I hope we will continue to carry out related activities in the future.”

Yuan Zhongguo, secretary general of CAAI Primary and Secondary Schools Working Committee and the head the Information Technology Teaching and Research Team of the Middle School Affiliated to Renmin University of China, made a speech on behalf of the organizer. He said, "I was a little worried at the beginning of the activity, because we were planning to hold this event offline. After listening to everyone’s reports throughout the whole process of this event, I found that the effect was very good. Students from different parts of the country gathered together to study the project, and worked well together." Mr. Yuan also expressed his appreciation to the experts and teachers from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Automation of the Academy of Sciences, and expressed his sincere thanks to the teachers from Beijing and Guangdong.
